Easter chocolate and salads

Happy Easter / Pasg hapus, hope everyone managed a bit of rest and maybe a bit of chocolate too. A short-ish and early note this week as we're off to Ynys Enlli for 3 days (been on the bucket list for a while so very excited). We're getting help with watering which we're very grateful for, and Rosie will be in the shop so we'll be open Thursday and Friday as normal.


We won't be checking emails this week so if you contact us we won't see it. If you can avoid sending emails until next week that would be much appreciated as it just reduces the amount of catching up we have to do when we get back to the world of wifi and technology.


In the field:

Chris has been working all through the Easter weekend - whilst the rest of us were eating chocolate! - and got a huge amount done. He and Rosie have pricked out about 1200 leeks (see pic) and 250 onions. Planted out about 200 lettuces, 100 clumps of parsnips plus a whole bed of beetroot and 3 beds of kale. Sown a bed of radishes in polytunnel and a bed of potatoes. We've lost a lot of tomato plants unfortunately - they've been killed off by the frosty nights (even though in the greenhouse) - so we've had to plant more but lost 6 weeks of growth. A lot of weeding! Strawberry plants looking really good which is exciting.


In the boxes:

Small boxes - leeks, beetroot (some of these are long and thin rather than round in case you were wondering!), palermo peppers, spring greens, bananas

Regular boxes - Prion salad, cauliflower, purple sprouting broccoli, chestnut mushrooms, kohlrabi, parsnips, apples (was supposed to be rhubarb but our supply fell through!).


Carrots, onions and potatoes all starting to get a bit jaded - won't be for long, but if you do get any dodgy ones we've missed when packing just chuck them in the compost. UK asparagus in boxes over next couple of weeks to help make up for it! ;)


In the shop:

As we aren't here, please don't send through any lists / pre-orders this week as noone will be checking the business email. Sorry, back to normal next week.


Plenty of: Potatoes, carrots, onions, beetroot, swede, celery, leeks, sweet potato, red peppers, chestnut mushrooms, fresh garlic / ginger / turmeric.

Limited: Salad, chard and spinach from Prion. Kohlrabi, cauliflower, spring greens.

Fruit: Oranges, apples, clementines, bananas, lemons, limes.


No bread this week as we're not here but we should have some daffodil bunches from Glanllyn Farm. Also eggs, sourdough bread, apple juice, other organic pantry staples and organic beer.


Recipe inspiration:

It's feeling a bit more like salad than soup weather at the moment - had feta cheese the other day for the first time in a while and it reminded me how good it is, so am thinking of a beetroot and feta salad like this one. There's also a kohlrabi and apple slaw or salad - a few variations on this, but this one is simple and tasty. Make sure you get all the peel off the outside of the kohlrabi.
